Tour report - ENSEMBLE ESPERANZA at the Olive Classic Festival - Part I

07. August 2019

Wednesday, July 31st

Today we are heading to the island of Pag, where soon the second edition of the Olive Classic Festival will start. A few hours by bus along the Adriatic coast allow us to take in the views over the sea and the olive groves. Arriving in the beautiful Hotel La Luna we meet the members of the festival team Laura Pavlin (festival office) and Andreas Domjanic (media). The day ends with a rehearsal for the Vivaldi Bassoon Concerto with our ICMA "Young Artist of the Year", Matko Smolcic. The young talents are now facing a series of intensive concert and trial days.

Thursday, August 1st

One more day until the opening concert. Festival Artistic Director Sara Domjanic will conduct rehearsals for upcoming concerts. On August 9th, she will perform the Mendelssohn Concerto for violin, piano and strings together with pianist Dmytro Choni. The preparations for tomorrow's concert are in full swing on and off the stage. The excitement is rising. In the evening there is still a dress rehearsal for the festive opening on the program. We are all looking forward to unforgettable concert evenings against the backdrop of Mediterranean magic!

Friday, August 2nd

The festive opening was planned for today. However, dark clouds gather over the horizon and announce strong thunderstorms. Around noon, organizer Drazen Domjanic decides to postpone the concert to tomorrow, Saturday, August 3rd. A good decision. In the late afternoon heavy rain showers and thunderstorms set in. The unexpected free evening our musicians use for further musical preparations and a little rest. The weather forecasts for tomorrow suggest an untroubled concert evening.

Saturday, August 3rd

Several weeks of intensive preparations - for the musicians and the organizational team alike - culminate on the evening of the 3rd of August in a brilliant opening concert of the ENSEMBLES ESPERANZA in front of a pleasingly numerous audience in the olive gardens of Lun. The program includes the string serenade OP. 20 by Edward Elgar, the bassoon concerto RV 484 by Antonio Vivaldi with Matko Smolcic and finally the Frederic Chopin Piano Concerto played by Dmytro Choni. We are very happy about the successful start and the great applause we received from the audience!

Sunday, August 4th

Encouragedby the success of the previous evening, the second concert evening begins again under a clear and star-filled sky. The ENSEMBLE ESPERANZA delights with works by Komitas Vardapet, Viktor Herbert, Daniel Schnyder, Gustav Holst and Leroy Anderson, and with noticeable enthusiasm they ensure an excellent continuation of the festival. The audience expressed its appreciation with abundant applause.
